This restaurant is always busy. You will have to go online to make reservations and often times if you want a weekend reservation, then good luck because they are booked until 2025. If you're lucky you might be able to get reservations for a weekday for dinner, but still it will be booked pretty far out, so good luck! This restaurant open at 4. When I got there, they were already full of patrons. Luckily I wasn't there to stand to dine in and had ordered take out. My pick up time was for 4:10-4:15. I got there just as they opened and my order was ready, which was perfect since I had to start my work shift at 4:30. It was quick and easy. The host at the front helped ring me up and grab my receipt. They have 20 minute parking for those who are picking up food or going to one of the shops for a short while. Other than that it's valet during dinner hours and I noticed a signage that said if no parking attendant is there, to pay for parking using a QR code. I am planning to make reservation to dine in soon. I am hoping it won't be 6 months out to eat here again?! They have
One of my favorite restaurants on Oahu. A must go every time I visit the island. It's hard to get reservations but takeout is always an option. The food here is always divine and perfectly cooked. The restaurant is clean and service is efficient and professional.
Always so amazing. Consistently delicious every time and worth the wait!! EVERYTHING IS SO GOOD. Reminds us of Japan and this is hands down our favorite restaurant!
Parking is limited. Street parking available. Street parking is free during the weekend. We made reservation 4 months but they do accept walk in. If you decide to do walk in come in early to sign in the sheet. The customer services are awesome. Very attentive to refill water plus the unlimited cabbage. My favorite is the oysters. Very delicious. I recommend at least try once.
This restaurant is located in an unassuming plaza on the second floor. We ordered the pork loin set and the shrimp katsu with pork tenderloin set. There are 3 choices for rice and 4 different choices of miso soups to choose from with your meal set. The meal also comes with unlimited salad and pickles refills. The food was fried to perfection and the pork was fried to perfection. I thought the shrimp katsu was good but not the best I've had. I am definitely interested in coming back to try the oyster katsu next time. Service was attentive and the waitresses were very knowledgeable and friendly. One of our favorite meals in Honolulu. I would recommend coming early when they open at 4pm to try to get seated if you cannot get a reservation.
This is probably the best katsu I've had so far....thin, crispy, very flavorful, comes with lots of sides, and awesome service! Make a reservation otherwise the wait is VERY long!!
We didn't have reservations and didn't show up a half hour before opening so we had to wait a good hour past the opening. Was it worth the wait? While I liked the fried oyster plate, I thought the crust was a bit on the thicker side. There's a choice of 3 different kinds of rice which can be perplexing if you're not familiar, but we tried them all and they were all good. The soup and pickles are included which seems rare these days. Because my companions ordered the pork katsu and the chicken katsu, I was able to try them. Surprisingly, the pork katsu had gristle and the chicken was dry. For the price, I expected better.
Make reservations ahead of time and good luck to you if you are not a local as reservations are hard to come by (MONTHS!) In fact, I built my travel to HNL around this reservation because of my first experience. It's located on the 2nd floor of business plaza. My first experience I was lucky to walk in as a party of one after showing up an hour ahead of their second seating. They likely had the space and the host was probably in a friendly mood (it helps if you're alone and pleasant!) I didn't have the option to do take out at the time as they require you to reserve ahead as I would have otherwise done that. So basically: either you're LUCKY or plan well ahead. If you find yourself with time to wait, there's a popular massage spot that I noticed many locals frequented. The second time around I was a party of two and we were seated while a service was taking place. In comparison to the first time I went, the entire restaurant was seated all at once. We were promptly given our menus and I opted for the set that included: - Shiso seaweed rice - Red miso soup with tofu & seaweed - Jyukusei (means aged) Pork loin cheese katsu set (big regret! Too much for me) The food was overall fresh, delicious but I am writing this review to remind myself that my eyes are always bigger than my appetite and so I should get the smallest at 5.7 oz or even 6.4 oz as I ended up having to take leftovers home. I would skip the cheese as it is ALOT of cheese. I had fun making my own katsu sauce where you grind sesame seeds and mix in your level of flavor preference once you order your items and you also pickled cabbage, Ume (pickled plum), and radish to eat on the side. Service was excellent and prompt and attentive. I would return again.
This place is always on my list whenever friends or family ask me for recommendations of where to go in Oahu. I've had katsu far and wide and the meals at Tamafuji are still top notch to me. Their batter is perfect with a balance of crispiness and texture. Seems like they've gotten extremely popular over the years and reservations online are booked one year out! Parking is available in the basement level and around surrounding streets. Be warned that your clothes and anything you bring inside will probably smell like fried food after your meal.
We've had this place bookmarked from a friend many years ago and it was top of our list to try for our first time in Hawaii! We came at 11:45a on a Sunday after landing at the airport and we're lucky enough to grab a spot on their walk in list since we never managed to get a reservation. Waited about an hour before being seated and given water, menus, and a warm towel to clean up (was a very nice touch)! Their Katsu is top tier! Well priced, perfectly fried, and complimented their sides so, so well! We got the sizzling miso plate and the standard 200g Tonkatsu set. Both came with our choice of four miso soups (white, red + option of tofu/seaweed or clam) and unlimited cabbage. The sizzling miso plate was great but you don't need sauce with it given they pour the glaze right on top when it gets to your table. After trying both the red and white miso- we definitely preferred the traditional white miso since it helped cut through the intense flavors of the dish. The red miso soup was still delicious but a bit too similar in taste to the saltier pork cutlets to stand out as much. Their cabbage was fresh, crispy, and cold - they have the BEST sesame dressing. So good we both got seconds! Overall the Tonkatsu here is out of this world - comparable to ones in Japan and rare to find one outside of the country.
